NATO straps are an alternative watch strap type, perfect for hot, summertime weather.
Also known as G10 straps because of their origins as the military’s choice of watch strap in the mid 1970’s, these straps were first seen worn by soldiers of the British Ministry of Defence Standard. The specifications for these straps were distinct. Made from nylon, they were produced only in “Admiralty Grey” with a width of 20mm and had chrome-plated brass buckles and keepers. They also had a shorter piece of nylon strap attached to the buckle which provided extra strength and security to the straps, making them perfect for hard-at-arms military routines.
Nowadays, NATO straps come in a range of colours styles and materials, so you are sure to find one that suits you and your watch. This sturdy and stylish strap is perfect for summertime weather, offering security and reliability during all types of summer activities. These straps are also breathable and comfortable, allowing you to relax.
This section will go into detail about how to remove a watch band and replace it with a NATO strap.
To remove an existing watchband, you will need a spring bar tool.
Turn your watch over so you are looking at the back. At the end of either band, you should have access to the spring bar, which is located between the band’s end piece and the lug.
Slip the forked end of the spring bar tool into the gap where the spring bar is located, just under the top lug.
Push the spring bar end down and to the side to pop the spring bar out.
Once the spring bar has popped out, pull it all the way out with your fingers, the end piece of the band will become detached so be careful not to lose it.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the other end of the watch band.
Congratulations! You have successfully removed the watch band.
To attach a NATO strap to your watch, you will need a NATO strap, two spring bars, and a spring bar tool.
Attach the spring bars to the watch. To do this, place one end of the spring bar in the hole located inside the lug. Then, using your spring bar tool, push the other end of the spring bar in and insert it into the hole opposite. Repeat with the other spring bar.
Once both spring bars are attached, it is time to attach the NATO strap. Making sure your watch is the right way up (12 at the top), thread the long part of the NATO strap between the watch and the spring bar at the top and pull it all the way through. Make sure the strap goes under the watch.
Thread the strap through the spring bar and the watch at the bottom and pull it all the way through.
Finally, thread the end of the long strap through the keeper (the small metal part attached to the short strap) and pull it all the way through.
Congratulations! You have successfully replaced your watch strap.
